The US received 280Cs fitted with the dreaded Solex 4A1 four-barrel carburetor that proved to be particularly troublesome, then and now.
And they were fitted with low compression, low output engines.
The 280CE benefited from a 9.
1 compression ratio compared to 8.
0 for the US 280C.
Combining the higher compression with fuel injection, the power output of a European 280CE was rated 205 HP SAE while a US 280C was rated at 120 HP SAE.
(Mercedes-Benz Production Models, Nitske) The result is a massive difference in power and refinement.
This 280CE feels like much like an S-class model with power to spare and sublime road manners.
Cold and hot starts are immediate and there is zero hesitation throughout speed ranges.
It's joy to drive.
The interior is fabulously preserved in every respect.
The original leather is gorgeous, carpets are superb, headliner is perfect.
Package panel is perfect, dash pad is perfect.
Lovely wood with a gentle patina of age.
Gauge faces are crisp.
A non-repeatable car in the US.
